I was really inspired by a cover of the New Yorker magazine. It was a piece by Barry Blitt: depicting Putin as a figure skater in the Olympics being judged by little mini versions of himself. Putin reminded me of Trump because they are both relatively hated and criticized political figures, and, personally, I don't like either of them. I decided to paint Trump as a contestant in a beauty pageant because I wanted to do a role-reversal and put him in a place of scrutiny, the same amount of scrutiny he gives the women participating in his pageants. I wanted to make him look almost as ridiculous as he acts. I chose watercolor because the original piece by Blitt was also a watercolor and it had a really nice, loose effect. Blitt is an established artist who has done over 80 covers for the New Yorker magazine, almost all of which have politics involved. |
