For this assignment, I decided to depict my "future self" as my hand holding a flower. My original idea was to have the hand spattered with paint instead, but it didn't translate too well onto the canvas. I decided to be less literal and paint myself holding a flower instead, to show how when I am older I want to continue to make beautiful things using my hands. Although now as I look back on it, it seems like such a trite idea and I kind of I wish I'd done something different. I do really like the way it looks though, and it gave me an opportunity to try a new technique that I discovered how much I really liked. I took a wooden board and layered a very thick, textured coat of gesso to use as a base before I started painting and I LOVED working with the bumpy texture. It gave the whole painting such a jittery feel and the little bits of gesso peeking through added a nice light touch, so I just left them there. I will hopefully be doing more paintings like this, but maybe with better subject material. |
